Don't Wait Until It's Too Late

POA documents cannot be signed after someone loses capacity. If your parent has dementia, act now while they can still legally sign. Once capacity is lost, you'll need guardianship through court, expensive, time-consuming, and stressful.

Important

Medical orders (not just wishes) about resuscitation and life-sustaining treatment. Followed by EMS and hospitals.

Digital Access is Critical

Make sure you can access your parent's email, online banking, and important accounts. Consider a password manager or secure list of credentials. Without digital access, managing their affairs becomes exponentially harder.

Social Security Card & Medicare Card

Helpful

Needed for healthcare, benefits, and identification. Keep copies in a safe, accessible location.

Birth Certificate & Marriage Certificate

Helpful

May be needed for benefits, insurance claims, or property transfers. Order certified copies if needed.

Military Discharge Papers (DD-214)

Helpful

Required for VA benefits, burial in national cemetery. Can be requested from National Personnel Records Center.

Tax Returns (Last 3 Years)

Helpful

Useful for Medicaid applications, financial planning, and estate settlement.
