The Teach-Back Method

Before leaving the hospital, have your parent (or yourself) explain back the discharge instructions to the nurse. "So just to make sure I understand, I should take this medication twice a day with food, and call if I see blood in my urine. Is that right?" This catches misunderstandings before they become dangerous.
