Start With Safety

Prevent falls, the #1 risk

Most seniors want to stay in their own home. With the right modifications, many can, safely. Some changes are free; others cost money but are far cheaper than a nursing home. Prioritize fall prevention first.

🚿 Bathroom (Highest Risk Room)

Bathrooms cause the most falls. Wet surfaces + hard fixtures = danger. Prioritize this room.

Grab bars by toilet and in shower $20-100
Non-slip mats in tub/shower $10-30
Raised toilet seat $30-80
Shower chair or bench $30-100
Handheld showerhead $20-50
Walk-in shower (remove tub) $3,000-8,000
Motion-sensor night light $10-25
Single-lever faucets (easier grip) $50-200
🛏️ Bedroom

Getting in and out of bed safely, and navigating at night.

Night lights along path to bathroom $10-30
Bed rails for stability $30-100
Bed at right height (18-20" from floor) Adjust
Remove throw rugs (tripping hazard) Free
Phone charger within reach $10
Lamp they can reach from bed $20-50
🪜 Stairs & Entryways

Stairs are a major fall risk. Consider alternatives if possible.

Handrails on BOTH sides $100-300
Non-slip treads on steps $20-50
Bright lighting on stairs $20-50
Ramp for entry (if steps are issue) $1,000-3,000
Stairlift $3,000-15,000
Move bedroom to main floor Free
Contrasting tape on step edges $10-20

The "Move Everything to One Floor" Strategy

If stairs are becoming risky, consider moving bedroom, bathroom access, and daily living to one floor. A first-floor setup can delay or prevent the need for more expensive modifications or facility care.

Help Paying for Modifications

Get a Professional Assessment

An occupational therapist can do a home safety assessment and recommend specific modifications based on your parent's abilities. Some insurance covers this. Contact your Area Agency on Aging for referrals.
